Recommendations and limits.

Here is where it shines at a bilingual family dinner, and where it needs a little help from you. We would rather you know before you sit down.

The family Wi-Fi

Ask for the Wi-Fi password when you arrive. The translation is a continuous stream, so it lives on a steady line.

A phone in the middle

In the middle of the table, away from the music and the clatter of plates. The better the sound in, the better the words out.

One speaker at a time

Let grandma finish her story, then answer, with a short pause between you. On a phone, let the AI voice finish first.

Out and about on mobile data

At the beach or in the village on 4G or 5G, captions may pause and catch up. Use Pocket Translate there: it is built for the phone and picks up again after short dropouts.

Big tables and loud dinners

Can it translate a video call with my partner’s parents live?

Yes. When the call runs on Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, send the Getix Translate bot: it joins under its own name, listed with the participants, and you admit it like any guest. For a call in your browser, pick its tab instead. Send the captions link to the family, and each person reads in their own language. Regular phone calls are not translated.

Do my partner’s parents need an app or an account?

No. Send the link in the family chat, or show it on your screen. They open it on their phone, tablet or laptop, pick their language and read along. No account, nothing to install, and they can make the text bigger with A+.

How well does it translate a family conversation?

Well enough to follow dinner and the Sunday call, not well enough to sign anything on. Names, nicknames, jokes and numbers are where AI slips, which is why the original always stays on your screen next to the translation, and why you can load family names into your glossary. For the civil ceremony, a doctor or a court, book a qualified interpreter. It is not a substitute for a certified or sworn interpreter where one is required.

How do I talk to my partner’s parents if they don’t speak English?

Put one phone between you, and keep learning their language: it means a lot that you try. You speak, they read it in theirs; they answer, you read it in yours. The original sits next to the translation on your screen, so you pick up words as you talk. And your partner can just enjoy the dinner.

Where does our conversation go?

To our speech providers, to become text and translation. It does not go to a human, and we do not train AI models on your meetings. What kinds of providers we use, which region they run in and how long anything is kept is on our privacy page.
